San Lorenzo Canyon, Acacia NM, 11-10-2012

A NM Mountain Club hike took us to San Lorenzo Canyon, close to the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge about 70 miles south of Albuquerque.  The trail head is tricky to find and requires driving about four miles on unmarked dirt roads from the highway underpass. This hike is only two miles in and may be extended to several miles by exploring the many side canyons, slots and caves. Above is our group, 8 of us, starting our hike into the canyon.

An interesting piece of information: the road leading into the canyon is a favorite of the New Mexico Carriage Club and the Rio Grande Mule and Donkey Association. Both like to hold rides on the road leading into the canyon. It is hard to imagine a more fitting place for a western stagecoach outing.

Moving deeper into the canyon.

We didn't hike very far into the canyon because we got side tracked exploring  the many caves and crevices.

One of the many hoodoo formation along the canyon.
