Extreme Lava Hike, Kalapana, HI, 12/16/12


We set off with a group of nine to see flowing red hot lava up close. A native Hawaiian guide led us through a through a 25-year old lava bed over two miles wide.  The going was arduous, finding a way on very uneven terrain, dotted with cracks and fissures.

A small miracle... vegetation (looked like a type of fern)  taking hold in this harsh and desolate environment.
